We know the pandemic, lockdowns, virtual learning, and lack of human contact have taken a big toll on the mental health of our youth. Parents and other anchors are worried and want to know what they can do and how to help.

Our speakers will share practical, hands-on tips, ideas, and resources. You’ll walk away with new knowledge and tools for strengthening your mental health and that of the young people in your life.

Derek Peterson is the creator of the Web of Support Framework & its metrics & measures. He is a youth development leader, writer, teacher, & advocate who works to show & measure the intersections of the field of youth development to issues in education, youth risk behaviors, community, & social change. He travels the world leading workshops, lectures, & retreats. As the founder of Integrative Youth Development & its Support Card he serves as Thought Leader for Kaleidoscope Connect (a division of Brightways Learning) in Missoula, MT, as an Associate with the International Institute for Children’s Rights & Development in Victoria, BC, & is Founder & CEO of the Institute for Community & Adolescent Resilience – Unifying Solutions. His book series on Helping Kids Succeed has over 300,000 copies in print. His work has been highlighted by the Harvard Education Review & he has also been recognized as the “Prevention Professional of the Year” & “Educator of the Year” in Alaska. He holds master’s degree in counseling from the Northern Arizona University & lives in Saint Paul, MN.

Carolyn Merrill Felty, MA, LP is the manager of School Based Mental Health at Canvas Health. This program serves 29 schools across the metro including all the Hastings School District school programs. Carolyn has been working in the mental health field since 2004. Carolyn has specialized in providing mental health services to children & adolescents in day treatment, school-based, & outpatient settings. She is trained in trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy. Currently, Carolyn offers consultation & collaboration to the Canvas Health therapists & the mental health teams in the district. “I am passionate about helping to support schools in addressing the mental health needs of their students, families & staff. I believe therapy should be person-centered, family focused & accessible to all children within a system to help facilitate change.”

Sandy Woosley

Sandy Woolsey MA LPCC LAMFT is a supervisor in the School Based Mental Health program at Canvas Health. S&y has been providing clinical therapy since 2000. S&y has provided individual, family & group therapy to youth & families in school-based settings, residential treatment, outpatient community settings, private practice & has provided trainings to parent groups. She specializes in working with complex trauma, dissociation, adoption, attachment, parenting support & strategies. She is trained in EMDR, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Adoption Competency through PACC, Internal Family Systems/Ego State Therapy, Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, & DBT. S&y believes in a strengths-based, collaborative, systems approach with her clients.

I have worked in the Crisis Unit at Dakota County since 2002. I have also worked in child protection, adult intake, & family drug court. I have a wholistic approach to mental health that includes diet, exercise, supplements, & mindfulness strategies. My area of interest is trauma informed practice & utilizing these strategies with all clients. I work with children, adolescents, & adults as well as community mental health providers. You do not have to be a professional to help someone through a mental health crisis; most people just need a little hope.

Jane is the Program Manager for the Helping Kids Succeed initiative for the United Way of Hastings. She’s worked for over 7 years to bring the model & it’s empowering message to the young people in Hastings. In that time, she’s worked with over 50 students who have been members of the YES Team (Youth Empowerment & Support), a teaching & leadership development team for emerging youth leaders. Her background includes experience in marketing & communications, training & development, & project management. Jane is a hockey parent & photographer.

Brady Erlandson

My name is Brady & I am a senior at Hastings High School. I have been a member of the United Way of Hastings YES Team for almost three years. I really enjoy teaching the Helping Kids Succeed Model & empowering the youth in my community. Currently, I spend a lot of my time working with kids at the YMCA in Hastings and very much enjoy spending my summers as a camp counselor. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new places with my friends and collecting vinyl records. Next year, I will be attending the University of Minnesota Twin Cities to study Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development in hopes of one day becoming a genetic counselor.

Kate leads NAMI’s parent education & support projects in Dakota County & Scott County as a project coordinator & parent educator. She works 1 on 1 with families to help them navigate the special education & mental health care system, & coordinates educational events. Her background is in direct children’s mental & behavioral health services & she is a certified Mad2Glad Parent Coach. She has published one children’s book & hopes to publish more in the future. Kate is the parent of 2 kids & speaks to strategies that she has used both professionally & in her personal life. In her free time, she enjoys swimming, writing, reading, & being outdoors.
