The mission of United Way of Hastings is to be a force for attracting diverse resources and building dynamic partnerships to improve the lives of people in our community.

We do this by working to create and support programs collaborations and initiatives that bring together community members, agencies, government, businesses local churches and foundations with the goal of addressing the root cause of the needs in our community.

2008 Allocations

United Way of Hastings
Agency Funding Guidelines

Funding will generally be limited to:

  1. Organizations which provide programs in the areas of: Meeting Basic Needs including providing food & shelter and increasing self-sufficiency; Health & Wellness improving health and increasing emergency preparedness, Nurturing Families and Children including Literacy and Finacial Stability. Programs encouraging child and youth development; resolving personal and family crisis; assisting older adults & special populations, and improving literacy for children and the entire community.
  2. Organizations that demonstrate their program's benefit to residents in our service area whether the service is provided as an independent agency or local/regional chapter of a national group.
  3. Organizations that measure and track the positive outcomes achieved by clients/consumers as a result of the services provided by the agency. Agencies that receive modest funding through the Community Grant category are not required to track outcomes.
  4. Nonprofit organizations recognized by the IRS as 501(c)3 or a similar tax exemption such as a school district or unit of county or local government.
  5. Agencies must maintain accounting records and monitor the use of United Way funds. Organizations must maintain an appropriate ratio of fundraising and administrative overhead to that spent for delivery of programs - generally a minimum of 70% of income to program services.
  6. Agencies that welcome diversity in the selection of governing board and staff and that practice non-discrimination in the delivery of services.

Funding is usually not granted for:

  1. Endowment or capital campaigns.
  2. Athletic associations or teams.
  3. Fundraising events, testimonial events or dinners and related activities such as silent auctions, raffles, walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons or telethons.

Funding will not be considered for:

  1. Individuals or for-profit organizations.
  2. Religious organizations if the activities serve only their membership or promote a particular religion or denomination.
  3. Lobbying efforts designed to influence legislation.
  4. Direct support for travel or tours by individuals or groups unless such travel is a critical component of an eligible program such as providing transportation for the elderly and disabled.
  5. Advertising other than that designed to make the public aware of available services.

2008 Funding Application

The mission of the United Way of Hastings is to be a force for attracting diverse resources and building dynamic partnerships to improve the lives of people in our community. United Way of Hastings is working to address underlying causes. Many of the United Way of Hastings Agencies are already doing work that is addressing root cause needs which is done by providing support & services in programs that build skills and develop preventative programs.

United Way of Hastings is looking for agencies that are working to make an impact in our community. Organizations requesting a grant from United Way of Hastings must be a 501(c)3 non-profit agency that has impact to individuals living in the geographic area that includes the Hastings School district. Applications for grants in 2008 will be available on January 11, 2008 and must be returned to the United Way of Hastings office by February 4, 2008. Our mission to improve lives and build partnerships should be considered in your application this year.

The application for 2008 funds from the United Way of Hastings is available for download below. The application includes two parts: 2008 application part 1 and part 2. A checklist follows this letter to be sure you include all parts of the application and the proper number of copies. Let me know if you need the application in a different format.

The application must be returned with eleven, three hole punched copies of the application w/exhibits and the budget form. And one copy, (3 hole punched) of the other items. Applications that are not duplicated & 3 hole punched cannot be accepted. Application deadline is Monday February 4, 2008.
